Podcast Review: Russell Simmons On The Mind And Meditation

April 16, 2017

I am a big fan of Lewis Howes. Much like myself, he would admit to not being the most academic of chaps, but one that is hugely proud of his work rate and willingness to learn from others. He hosts a hugely successful podcast called 'The School of Greatness'. As an ex-proffesional American Football player he was looking for new direction in his life and he found that in leveraging technology, namely linkedin to assist other athletes and organise events.  Without having any business experience he went from sleeping on his sister’s couch to running a seven figure business in a couple years. He is now a public figure and speaker.

This week Lewis had the enigmatic Russell Simmons on the podcast. My highlight of their talk was Russell discussing his view on the mind and why meditation is so important to his existence. He opens by saying that every religious scripture has reference to a still/quite mind. I wasn't aware of this, but it certainly makes sense. He goes on to say 'your life is not stressful or hectic it's your mind that's stressful or hectic'. Having spent the last 6 months practising a daily 20 minute guided meditation, I have experienced the benefits of a quieter mind. Finally, Russell goes on to suggest attachment is the route cause of suffering (in line with Buddhist approach). He urges the audience to simply watch life like a movie. Material goods will come and go as thoughts do.

Download 'The School of Greatness' if you haven't done so already - you wont regret it. I have found Lewis to be great for reminding me there are those out there forging their own paths and not settling for what they were told to do.
